Interesting events in L'Escala

The are many enjoyable events taking place in L'Escala. Here are a few tips.

 

Carnival Sunday
A noisy, colurfully costumed carnival procession parades through the city with floats made by clubs, companies and shops .

Good Friday
"Via Circus" - representation of the Passion of Christ as a procession with the crucifixion of Jesus. Beginning  22.00 at the Church of L'Escala.

23. April "Sant Jordi"
Ancient custom in memory of St. George, the custom is that women receive roses (from their loves) and men a book. The whole city smells of roses and is full of book stalls.

2nd weekend in May "Triumviat Mediterrani"
Greco-Roman market with demonstrations, all over L'Escala, throughout the weekend.

1 st weekend in June "Sardanas"
Typical Catalan folk dance to which everyone is invited.

23. June "Sant Juan"
FCelebration of the Summer Solstice, at nightfall the setting off of fireworks is allowed ! (but not on November 5th ! )  You can buy the fireworks a few days earlier..

1st Thursday in August - Music Festival of the Mediterranean


16. August "Havaneres"

Celebration of harmonious shanties held in the Bay of Montgó.

July + August
Every Wednesday at 22.00 sardanas are danced against the backdrop of the sea.

Early  September "Fiesta Mayor"
City festival with various festivities and a firework display, weather permitting.

2nd or 3rd Saturday in September "Fiesta de la Sal + Trobada de Vela Llatina"
A meeting of historic sailboats.

1 st Sunday in Oktober "Festa de l'Anxova"
Gastronomic gourmets may enjoy some lovely mixed seafood.

Christmas
Christmas here is from December until 06 January. In early December there is a Christmas market which lasts for several days, held in the old town. A special feature of the region is the "Pesebre Vivent", the living nativity scene with actors in costumes of yore, and in biblical settings. 
On January 05, the "Trifàsic" takes place. This is the landing of the 3 kings with Roman legionnaires from the sea - and where the children give their list of longed-for presents to the kings.

New Year's Eve
Time for traditional food with family and friends at a restaurant. At midnight, a grape is eaten with every peal of the bell, with the best wishes for the New Year!
